U.S. Forces Down Iranian Drones as Talks Continue on Interim Agreement

The United States downed Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz, even as negotiations continued on a temporary peace agreement aimed at reopening the strategic waterway — adding further uncertainty over when a deal might be reached.

U.S. Central Command said it intercepted several unmanned aerial vehicles targeting commercial vessels in the area, just hours after a senior official in President Donald Trump’s administration stated that the likelihood of Washington and Tehran signing the agreement soon stands between 80 and 85 percent.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi echoed those expectations in a speech broadcast on state television on Friday, indicating that the signing could occur within the coming days.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that an agreement to end the war that erupted in February is imminent, though none of those promises have materialized so far.

The main U.S. objectives are to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic and to curb Iran’s nuclear program. In return, Iran is insisting on retaining a degree of control over the waterway and gaining immediate access to its frozen funds, while negotiations on uranium enrichment are deferred until after the interim agreement is signed.

The senior U.S. official said Washington expects the deal to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapons program, while permitting it to maintain a civilian nuclear program for energy production.

He added that the agreement would also guarantee the removal of enriched nuclear materials from Iran and the end of the mutual blockade imposed by both sides on the Strait of Hormuz. If all provisions are implemented, the United States would ease sanctions on Iran and allow it to reintegrate into the global economy.

The official noted that some Iranian hardliners are still seeking to undermine any diplomatic breakthrough.

For his part, Abbas Araqchi said that Iranian sovereignty over the strait would remain intact under the proposed agreement. He added that the new Hormuz management system would differ from the previous arrangement, under which Tehran had provided management services for free.
